AI Notetaking For Lawyers

Happy Saturday HeyCounsel members! We aim to get these newsletters out during the week, but sometimes the week is so crazy that it bleeds into the weekend. So tell us, is a weekend newsletter a terrible idea? Or do you not mind it?

In this edition. A CPG company is looking for help managing their Trademark portfolio; A quick breakdown on using Notion from a privacy and ethics standpoint; and how to delegate content creation with LinkedIn Ghostwriting That Works.

AI Notetaking For Lawyers

Out of the gate, it is important to understand that AI notetaking is not “new”.  General AI note-taking apps like Otter.ai and Fireflies.ai have been around for years.  They can be very useful tools.

These platforms offer real-time transcription and help pull out action items from meetings.  They also seamlessly integrate with platforms like Zoom and Microsoft Teams.  Other benefits like searchable transcripts and highlighting key phrases make them useful for reviewing details from client consultations or searching through a recorded deposition for important details.

The challenge with utilizing AI for automated notes is may ignore confidentiality requirements, and trigger compliance violations with regulations like the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (“HIPAA”).  You do not want to increase the risk profile for your firm just for more convenient transcription.

Our members recently went deep on AI Notetaker due diligence following a question from James Warren (big thanks to William Love and Christian Brown for their thoughts). As always, do your own research and make your own risk-reward decisions when building your practice tech stack. We all have different use cases, clients, and needs. But hopefully these community conversations make you 10% smarter on any given subject.
