🔥 Community Spotlight

Ending the Day Ahead

A member posted what sounds like a small habit but lands harder than expected: near the end of every day, when you realize you are not going to finish everything on your list, stop and build tomorrow's list instead. The tip comes from a senior M&A partner -- someone who used it throughout a decades-long career, from first-year associate to senior partner.

The replies added texture. One member described using Claude to recap the day -- email, Slack, tasks -- so the record shows not just what you didn't finish, but everything that actually got done, including the unplanned work that snuck in. Another noted that daily time-tracking for billable work does something similar: even if the full draft didn't ship, you can see the hairy earnout provision you worked up, the two-thirds of the agreement you finished, the calls you got through. The consistent theme: the list you complete is rarely the list you wrote. Give yourself credit for the actual day.

💬 Threads of the Week

Handling a CIPA "Pen Register" Demand Letter →

Dealing with CIPA demand letters has become common enough that the community had a real playbook ready: don't panic, but don't ignore it either. Two members with direct experience in this exact claim type stepped in with practical advice, and the group flagged a pending California bill with a two-year lookback that could nullify a wave of these claims once it passes. If a client brings you one of these, there's a known path now -- ask before you respond. Eight replies.  Members

Latin America Buy-Side M&A -- The Community Covers the Map →

When a member needed experienced M&A counsel across Chile, Brazil, and Peru, the thread moved fast. Within 13 replies, multiple practitioners had surfaced specific attorney recommendations for each jurisdiction -- including personal introductions and at least one offer to coordinate U.S. cross-border aspects directly. A good reminder that if you need to staff a deal outside your jurisdiction, asking here is faster than a cold search. Thirteen replies.  Members

When Joint Counsel Goes Dark →

A member representing a group of clients alongside co-counsel hit a wall: repeated requests to be copied on case communications went nowhere, and calls went unanswered. The thread turned into a broader conversation about protecting yourself in joint representation -- staying visible into a matter you're jointly responsible for, when to escalate, and the practical middle ground before jumping straight to a bar complaint. If you've ever shared a case with a co-counsel who won't loop you in, this one's worth a read. Four replies.  Members

The Engagement Letter Clause That Tells Clients "No" →

A member is testing new language for an engagement letter that draws a hard boundary up front: the firm's job is to give sound legal counsel, not to get the client whatever they want regardless of what the law allows. The idea sparked a quick back-and-forth on tone (one member suggested dropping the word "wise") and a broader itch a few members share -- how to set expectations early with clients who confuse a lawyer for a genie. Borrow the language if you want it. Three replies.  Members
